Few questions come up more often in our consultations, and few are surrounded by more noise. Some sellers talk about lab-grown stones as if they were imitations; others talk about natural stones as if they were a scam. Neither is true. Here is the plain version.
Both are diamonds
A lab-grown diamond is carbon crystallised into the same structure as a mined one. It has the same hardness, the same way of bending light and the same sparkle. It is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials. Without laboratory equipment, no jeweller can tell the two apart by eye.
The difference is origin. A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over an immense span of time. A lab-grown diamond is grown in weeks, under controlled pressure and heat or by vapour deposition.
Where they really differ
- Rarity. Natural diamonds are finite. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced to order, which is why they cost considerably less for the same size and quality.
- Value over time. Natural diamonds have an established resale and exchange market. Lab-grown prices have been falling as production grows, so a lab-grown stone should be bought for the pleasure of wearing it, not as a store of value.
- Meaning. For some families a stone from the earth carries weight that no specification can replace. For others, a larger or finer stone for the same budget matters more. Both are sound reasons.
How to tell which one you are buying
Always ask for a laboratory report. IGI and GIA both grade natural and lab-grown diamonds, and a lab-grown report says so clearly. The report number is usually laser-inscribed on the girdle, the thin edge of the stone, so the stone and the paper can be matched. Your invoice should state the origin in words, not leave it to be assumed.
Which should you choose?
A useful way to think about it: if the piece is meant to be passed down, or if you may one day want to exchange it towards something larger, a natural stone makes more sense. If you want the most presence for your budget in a ring you will wear every day, a lab-grown stone is an excellent, honest choice.
Many clients do both: a natural centre stone with lab-grown accents, or a lab-grown solitaire now and a natural anniversary piece later.
